Work starts on new homes for local families in Suffolk village
Affordable homes for 67 local families are being built in a historic village a stone’s throw from Ipswich.
Flagship Homes – part of Bromford Flagship – has started work on the Lime Kilns development off Ely Road in Claydon.
Oleg Barsoukov, Flagship Homes project manager, said it was an exciting development that would help the Suffolk community grow.
Mr Barsoukov said: “Claydon is a lovely village, and there’s a clear need for more affordable housing here.
“We’re delighted to be bringing these homes forward and helping them become part of the local landscape.”
The project includes 42 homes for affordable rent, which will be allocated to families on the local council waiting list. They will be let at around 80% of market rate and be managed by Bromford Flagship housing association Samphire Homes.
The other 25 will be for shared ownership – a hybrid between buying and renting which makes it easier to get onto the housing ladder.
Sarah Lingley, lettings officer at Flagship Homes, said: “We’ve been working closely with Mid-Suffolk Council and local residents to make sure that we understand exactly what Claydon needs.
“We’re confident that this is a really valuable addition to the local area, and I can’t wait to see this gorgeous village keep growing.”
The homes will have timber frames made off-site in a factory before assembly on site. This Modern Method of Construction (MMC) makes for faster builds and more energy-efficient homes. Each home will also come with an air source heat pump and an electric vehicle charging point.
Claydon, four miles north of Ipswich, has a history stretching back to the Middle Ages. It is home to one of Suffolk’s few pre-Norman churches – St Peter’s – and was the site of a Second World War air force fuel depot.
The Lime Kilns is named after a historic lime kiln, which was near the site, and the ground beneath the new homes contains limestone.
Ipswich-based Aspen Build is the principal contractor on the project, which has been part-funded by Homes England.
Gary Rush, Construction Manager at Aspen Build, said: “Claydon has such a rich history and we’re proud to honour that as we build these homes for the future.
“This is a special development, and we can’t wait to see the Claydon community grow.”
