Green light for 115 homes in Leicestershire village

Planners have given the go ahead for a new housing development to bring 115 homes to a village in south Leicestershire.

Blaby District Council’s planning committee approved the proposed scheme by national housebuilder Miller Homes for a development to be built on land off Springwell Lane in Whetstone.

Miller Homes East Midlands will deliver its scheme on a 22.5-acre parcel of land to comprise a mix of one to five-bedroom homes. A total of eight properties will be bungalows, part of the private mix of 86 new homes.

A further 29 properties will be built and provided as affordable housing, split between shared ownership and affordable rent.

More than half of the site to be developed on by Miller Homes will be designated as open space, and will include a children’s play area.

The significant amount of open space, coupled with other measures to be delivered as part of the scheme, will lead to a 10 per cent biodiversity net gain for this parcel of land.

Tom Roberts, regional operations director of Miller Homes East Midlands, said: “We are naturally very pleased at the resolution to grant planning permission for 115 new homes in Whetstone, in an area of south Leicestershire in which Miller Homes is already well known as a developer.

“Our scheme will deliver new homes to help meet Blaby District Council’s current housing supply need, as noted in the latest local plan for the area. The development has been carefully thought out and through a detailed consultation process we have been able to achieve a wide ranging mix of housing to help suit the needs of any buyer in this part of Leicestershire.

“The development will create jobs, better access through the village, support for local services and, crucially, a high quality mix of sustainable new housing which will achieve a significant biodiversity net gain.

“We will now look ahead to moving onto the site and beginning construction work to help deliver these new homes to Whetstone. We will endeavour to keep communication clear and consistent with residents and prospective customers to Miller Homes as we move forward with this new development.”

Access to the new development will be provided by a new road off Springwell Lane which will be delivered as part of the wider scheme in Whetstone.

Miller Homes’ development will create 120 full-time equivalent jobs, some of which will be designated for Blaby residents.

Construction work is set to begin this summer, and is expected to last until 2028.
