Green Light for New Housing Within Wellesley Regeneration Scheme
Plans have been approved for 84 new homes to be built as part of the wider residential programme at the former military barracks near Aldershot.
National housebuilder Miller Homes has been given the green light to commence building work on an 8.66-acre parcel of land off Pennefathers Road, within the Pennefathers Zone of the Wellesley regeneration project.
The new development – to be known as Woodlands Edge – will form part of the wider scheme to transform the iconic former military barracks, which once served as a base for hundreds of British soldiers over many decades, to create 3,850 new homes.
Miller Homes is to build 32 affordable properties to provide to Grainger Housing Trust to manage as part of its development. The remaining 52 private homes will comprise a mix of one to four-bedroom properties.
The developer, whose Basingstoke-based Southern region is delivering the scheme, expects to release its first homes for sale by the end of the year.
David Brown, managing director of Miller Homes Southern, said:
“We are naturally very pleased to have secured planning consent to move forward towards the delivery of our development of new homes at an already well-established area earmarked for new housing in Wellesley.
“Miller Homes will build a total of 84 new properties within the Pennefathers Zone of the project, surrounded by mature woodland and green space, which leant itself to our new development name – Woodlands Edge.
“Our scheme will complement its existing surroundings, and we also plan to honour the location with an installation of heritage to denote the significance of Wellesley and Aldershot more widely, recognising its importance in the nation’s military history.
“We will shortly move onto the site to begin work on our new homes. We look forward to releasing the first selection of properties for sale in December, before welcoming people to our development in early 2026.”
Miller Homes had previously purchased the land, identified for new housing, unconditionally from the Defence Infrastructure Organisation.
The developer will honour the former use of the land through the provision of a landscaped memorial square which will pay tribute to the victims of the 1972 attack on the 16th Parachute Brigade in Aldershot, which sadly killed seven people.
Woodlands Edge will also include a heritage trail as part of its setting which is surrounded by existing mature woodland, which will be further enhanced by Miller Homes.
The wider residential project in Wellesley is set to provide 3,850 new homes, while additional infrastructure for the area includes community facilities, schools, open spaces, a neighbourhood centre and Wellesley Woodlands.
