Stay safe in the sun: Summer safety gear for builders

As temperatures rise across the UK, construction sites face a seasonal challenge that is often overlooked.
While winter is typically associated with dangerous working conditions, summer brings its own set of serious risks. Extended exposure to heat and sunlight can affect concentration, increase fatigue, and raise the likelihood of accidents.
The provision of protective gear is more than just a safety requirement – it is a strategic operational choice to maintain site speed, productivity, and worker confidence. PPE still needs to deliver the same levels of durability and protection while allowing workers to stay cool, comfortable, and productive throughout the day.
This is where the right combination of gloves, safety apparel, and breathable workwear becomes critical. If PPE is too heavy or uncomfortable in hot conditions, workers are far more likely to remove it or wear it incorrectly, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries on site.

The right equipment: a sun-safe solution
Hand protection is one of the most important forms of PPE on any construction site, regardless of the season.
Throughout the year, workers regularly handle abrasive materials, power tools, sharp edges, and chemicals, all of which can cause serious injuries without the right gloves. However, traditional gloves can quickly become uncomfortable in high temperatures, reducing dexterity and causing excessive sweating.
Instead, the focus should shift towards lightweight, breathable glove solutions that provide protection without restricting movement or causing discomfort. Modern glove technologies now allow contractors to select products with high levels of cut, abrasion, and chemical resistance while still maintaining flexibility and airflow.
Materials play a major role in achieving that balance. Lightweight liners made from nylon, polyester, Lycra, and spandex blends also improve comfort and mobility on site. Seamless knitted constructions and ventilated designs can help reduce sweat build-up and hand fatigue during long shifts, allowing workers to maintain productivity without compromising protection.
Foam nitrile coatings, for example, provide strong grip and abrasion resistance while remaining breathable enough for prolonged use in warmer conditions. Polyurethane-coated gloves offer flexibility and dexterity for precision handling tasks, while nitrile-coated options help maintain grip in oily or wet environments where control remains essential.
For tradespeople carrying out detailed or repetitive tasks, this combination of breathability, grip, and flexibility becomes especially important during summer. Gloves that are too heavy or restrictive can quickly affect compliance, movement, and performance.
Proactive protection: The importance of safety apparel
Alongside gloves, safety apparel plays a major role in helping workers manage heat and sun exposure during summer months. Traditional workwear can often become restrictive and uncomfortable in high temperatures, particularly on exposed sites where workers spend long periods in direct sunlight.
Lightweight, breathable clothing is now becoming a key part of summer PPE strategies. Ventilated fabrics, moisture-management materials, and UV-resistant layers help workers stay cooler while still maintaining the protection expected on active construction sites.
Long-sleeve garments and UV-protective sleeves are particularly valuable for outdoor trades, helping reduce the risk of sunburn and prolonged UV exposure without adding unnecessary bulk. As awareness grows around the long-term risks associated with working in direct sunlight, more companies are beginning to view sun protection as an essential part of PPE rather than an optional extra.
High-visibility clothing also remains crucial during summer. Bright conditions and glare can reduce visibility around machinery, vehicles, and busy working zones, making compliant hi-vis apparel essential throughout the warmer months.

Building a year-round safety culture
Comfort on site has a direct impact on both safety and productivity. Heat stress and dehydration can affect concentration, slow reaction times, and increase physical fatigue, all of which raise the likelihood of mistakes and injuries.
Providing PPE that is designed specifically for warmer conditions helps reduce these issues while encouraging workers to wear equipment correctly throughout the day.
Combined with regular breaks, hydration, and shaded rest areas, breathable safety apparel can play an important role in supporting workforce wellbeing during periods of high temperature.
As construction sites continue to operate through increasingly unpredictable weather conditions, adapting PPE strategies for summer is becoming a practical necessity rather than a seasonal consideration.
